We have much to report on our move to Costa Rica. There are many drafts in production! But I thought I’d do a quick post on the family bed.
After almost a year of sleeping separately (M and Daddy in one room, J and I in another), we are officially back to the family bed here in Costa Rica! I am loving it, too! I’m also very sure that M (age 6) is much happier with us all in the room together. I know he has wanted that for a long time, but the tiny bedrooms in our New York house prevented it. I think having the family bed back is especially important to him now, with the disruption of our big move.
Our rental here in Costa Rica has 2 bedrooms. One bedroom is medium size and is in the main house. The other bedroom is much larger, and is in a separate building, separated from the main house by a short patio. We chose to all sleep in the larger bedroom because it can fit 2 queen-sized beds, side to side, plus a shelving unit for clothes. Most of that room is now wall-to-wall bed, but who cares? We sleep in a bedroom. We don’t go jogging in there!
Besides the benefit of having our kids feeling more safe and secure with the family bed, another benefit is that the other bedroom has become an office and toy storage room. It’s nice to have another room with a discrete purpose. Who needs multiple rooms for sleep, after all?
My only fear is what we will do when the baby comes. I know the baby will fit into the new family bed just fine. But if I have to get up at night and nurse/walk, I think I might want some kind of small daybed in the main house where I can lay down if I want to. I’ll have to figure something out in the next months so I can have that flexibility.
